The President of South Korea declares martial law to counter North Korea

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared martial law nationwide on Tuesday night, accusing the opposition of subverting the state and colluding with North Korea.

This declaration comes amid intense political tension in South Korea, as President Yoon faces strong opposition from the parliament, which is controlled by the opposition party.

President Yoon stated that martial law is a necessary measure to protect the nation and eliminate opposition groups. In an unannounced televised speech, he declared, “I hereby proclaim martial law to safeguard the Republic of Korea from the threats posed by the communist forces of North Korea” and the opposition groups, which he accused of being “anti-state forces” undermining the freedom and well-being of the people and the constitution.

President Yoon added that he intends to rebuild a free and democratic country through martial law. However, he did not provide specific details about the measures to be implemented.
